FC Zhenis are delighted to officially welcome experienced midfielder Alexander Merkel, who joins the club after his time with Legentus FC in the UAE Second Division.
The 34-year-old playmaker arrives in Astana bringing a wealth of international experience, having competed at the highest levels of European football throughout his career.
Merkel is best known for his early years at Italian giants AC Milan, where he rose through the academy system and later became part of a Serie A championship-winning squad. He made appearances for Milan’s senior side during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, showcasing his technical quality and vision in midfield.
Over the years, Merkel has built an impressive football journey with spells at clubs such as Udinese, Genoa, England’s Watford, Dutch side Heracles Almelo, and Türkiye’s Gaziantep, earning recognition for his creativity and intelligence on the ball.
A Key Addition to the Midfield
Club officials have described Merkel as the new “brain” of FC Zhenis’ midfield, highlighting his ability to control the tempo of the game and deliver decisive moments in key matches.
“His ball control, playmaking ability, and vast experience can become a major factor in the Kazakhstan Premier League,”
said Aidyn Kozhakhmet, General Director of FC Zhenis.
Merkel has also represented the Kazakhstan national team, adding further international pedigree to the squad.
With his leadership, composure, and playmaking skill, Alexander Merkel is expected to play an important role as FC Zhenis continue their ambitions for success in the upcoming season.
